Sharing

This page covers sharing your files, calendars and address books with other people, and using what they share with you. You can share with anyone who has an account on the same mail server.

Sharing something of yours

  1. Right-click a folder, calendar or address book you own.
  2. Choose Share….
  3. Pick people from the directory.
  4. Give each person Viewer or Editor — or set their individual rights by hand.

Anything of yours that is shared carries a small badge. That lets you see at a glance which of your folders and calendars other people can reach.

How it works

Sharing uses JMAP Sharing, the part of the JMAP standard for giving other accounts on the same server access to your things.

Using what others share with you

Shared things appear where they belong. A shared folder is in Files, a shared calendar is in the calendar, and a shared address book is in Contacts. Each sits under Shared with me, beside your own. You never switch accounts to see them.

You add them yourself. Anything shared with you waits under Available to add until you add it. Until then it does nothing:

  • a calendar you haven't added shows no events;
  • an address book you haven't added suggests no contacts in the To field.
Why adding is a separate step

The server lists every collection in an account you can reach, whether or not anyone meant to share it with you. So appearing in that list is not proof that it was offered. Adding it is your decision.

Stopping sharing, or hiding a share

These are two different things:

Mail folders can't be shared

Sharing a mail folder does not work

Stalwart accepts a mail folder share and stores it, but never delivers it. The folder never appears for the person it was shared with, and nothing reports a failure. So ihasmail no longer offers to share mail folders.

A mail folder that was shared before still offers Stop sharing, because a share nobody can see is exactly the one you most want to clear.
